Norway – Ireland

Elisabeth Kristensen, Silja Skoglund (prevented from coming), Dave Ruane

Tell us about your team; who are you and where do you come from?

Elisabeth is an artist and sculptor from Kautokeino/Alta, in the Norwegian arctic. She has Samibackground. Silja is glass blower from Troms. Dave lives in Sweden, but comes from Ballina in Ireland. He is working at the support team at Icehotel, Jukkasjärvi.

Team History

How long have you worked together? What are your team’s greatest achievements?

Dave and Elisabeth has only known each other and worked together for a year. But a very intensive one it's been with many different projects in snow, ice, straw and sand. It's been a rollecoaster year with many adventures, but one memorable was winning 2nd prize at Festival de volcan in Mexico for our straw sculpture. Another is being part of the support team that take care of all the artist at icehotel in Sweden, challenging work.

Elisabeth and Silja met at the Borealis Festival in Alta. Elisabeth was sculpting and Silja wanted to try it out. A connection was made and a year after they worked together for the first, and so far only time, at Baltic Snow Call. This was Silja's first and so far only experience with snow sculpting.

Dave is pretty new to the carving world, but has worked with snow and ice for Icehotel the last 17 years. That means helping artists make their rooms, building the snow tunnels and ice bars. He likes the simplicity, beauty and versatility of the material.

About Snow Sculpting

How did you end up carving snow and what is best in snow sculpting?

Elisabeth has been sculpting snow and ice since 2004. The beauty of the material is utterly addictive. She is attracted to the idea that everything is ephemeral, and part of a whole. The fact that something is permanent should not define its value, because temporality is also eternal. The most wonderful and the most painful moments in life are ephemeral and therefore eternity lies in every moment.
