TEAM FINLAND – LUMISTIT

Ari-Pekka Kuusela, Aleksi Salakka, Antti Kolppo

Introduction

Tell us about your team; who are you and where do you come from?

We are Lumistit from Kuusankoski, Finland.

Team History

How long have you worked together? What are your team’s greatest achievements?

Lumistit was founded in 1997. We used to compete for many years at the annual Finnish Championship qualification contest held in Kuusankoski.

In 1999 we participated for the first time in the Finnish championships which were held in Kemi. Lumistit got the fourth place. In 2006 we finally won the gold and since then, we have competed around 15 times in the national championships.

Finnish championship medals:
Gold: 2006, 2009, 2010, 2017
Silver: 2008, 2012, 2015, 2016
Bronze: 2002

We have also represented Finland at international events, such as Sapporo Snow Festival in Hokkaido, Japan, Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg and an international snow sculpture challenge in Whitehorse, Canada.

About Snow Sculpting

How did you end up carving snow and what is best in snow sculpting?

Kuusankoski has had a long tradition in snow sculpting since early 80’s. We used to see snow sculpture contests being held every year in our hometown when we were growing up and in 1997 we decided to try it ourselves.

The actual challenge, the fascinating combination of art and exercise, the opportunity to express ourselves and the team spirit gave us the push to continue and develop our skills and tools forward.

Baltic Snow Call!?

What do you expect from Baltic Snow Call?

We hope to see a good competition and great snow sculptures in ideal conditions, which the city of Oulu can certainly provide. We also look forward to meeting new friends from other countries.
